LECTURE: "Oneida Mansion House," (ROME/DGV)
Start Date: 10/8/2013Start Time: 6:00 PM
End Date: 10/8/2013
Event Description:

Dr. Anthony Wonderley is Curator of Collections and Interpretation at the Oneida Community Mansion House, a not-for-profit museum built by the famous nineteenth-century utopian group. Wonderley writes extensively about the Oneida Community and the Oneida Indians. Two books about the latter are published by Syracuse University Press (Oneida Iroquois Folklore, Myth, and History; and At the Font of the Marvelous: Exploring Oral Narrative and Mythic Imagery of the Iroquois and Their Neighbors).

This introduction to the most radical utopian commune in America history (1848-1889) explains why they practiced group marriage and started up humankind's first eugenics program, and how they achieved practical gender equality and freedom from household drudgery. The talk surveys their remarkable history and showcases the beautiful home they built (today, a National Historic Landmark). It also tells what came after: a utopian company making world-famous silverware.
